Holland Park houses were built by James Weller Ladbroke
The Holland Park houses were built on the former farm land that James Weller Ladbroke owned and developed. In 1823, he hired a prominent London architect, Thomas Allason, to produce a master plan for the development of the area. His design included a large circus that measured over 500 meters, a road running north-south through its centre, and houses built around the open gardens. The houses were built with the intention that residents would be able to enjoy the gardens in privacy.
James Weller Ladbroke started by developing land in the area that fronted on Uxbridge Road. He then signed agreements with developers who would build houses on the land. In return, Weller Ladbroke granted them a 99-year lease on the properties. The developers then sublet the houses to make income, paying Ladbroke ground rent on them.
Holland Park houses were named after their street numbers. These streets were originally called Notting Hill Terrace and Ladbroke Grove. Later, the area was renamed Holland Park Avenue and the streets were numbered to reflect their new names. These streets were also home to a school, the Ladbroke Girls’school, and the Isaac Newton Boys’school. The schools were a major educational hub for the area, drawing visitors from around the world. Some of the most famous students in history attended the schools in the area.
During the eighteenth century, the area of Holland Park was populated by robbers. The area was once a racecourse, but it eventually failed and was closed. During the 1830s, it was surrounded by houses.
They were inherited by Robert Rich
Robert Rich inherited the Holland Park houses from his father, Henry Rich. His father was a high-ranking member of Charles the first’s court and was one of his trusted advisors. As a result, he had access to the king’s bedroom. Today, the Holland Park houses are used as a youth hostel and as a backdrop for operas in the summer. The so-called Belvedere is also used as a restaurant.
The house was originally called Cope Castle. It was originally built in 1605 by the diplomat Sir Walter Cope. Later, it passed through the Fox family and was used as a meeting place for the Whigs. However, it was largely destroyed by German firebombing during the Blitz in 1940. Only the east wing of the house remains. The rest of the buildings were destroyed in the fire. After the death of Lord Holland, his widow took over the mansion. His son became the 1st Baron Holland and the 2nd Earl of Warwick. He inherited the Rich house and titles from both his father and mother. The mansion was rented out to Henry Fox. Fox had an affair with Lady Caroline Lennox. She eventually married Fox in the Fleet prison in 1744. The marriage is the subject of a famous book by Stella Tilyard, entitled Aristocrats.
